Being the history nerd I was as a kid, I couldn’t resist making this little parody comic when we studied the Crimean War at school. The actions of admiral Honway Plumridge when he came to Finland, sounded so bizarre to me, that I wanted to make fun of him. So yeah, the comic is not meant to be completely historically accurate.
I don’t have any anti-British sentiments by the way, I was just a kid making a joke that seems a bit tasteless now.
So, Plumridge really did burn stuff that had already been paid for by his own people, and when he was informed about it, he just shrugged. Basically everything that happens in the comic happened, at least according to our study materials, I just made a simplified version of it to make the guy look even dumber than he probably was.
The people of Oulu were curious when they heard the Brits were doing something weird, and they gathered to watch.
I don’t remember who the guy “beating sense” into Plumridge is, but in our history book that expression was used, so I wanted to draw that bit literally. 😀
Ananias Micklesson was an ex-pilot who knew the waters, but had been fired for his drinking habits, and for some reason he decided to take the admiral to Oulu.
In case someone who takes this comic too literally happens by: 13-year-old me did not actually think this was the way the British army handled things on a regular basis. I just thought it would be funny if the dumb guy claimed that, and if the people who might not have had that much contact with foreigners before, would have that kind of first impression of the British army.
